Press release – Organ donation and transplantation activity in 2022 in Hungary

Budapest, January 2023 – Organ donation activity and consequently organ transplantation activity started to increase in 2022 in Hungary, which was limited worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic in the previous two years. In 2022, there were more deceased and living donors, therefore more kidney, liver and heart transplants could be achieved than in the previous year. In the 60th anniversary year of the first Hungarian organ transplant (which was a living donor kidney transplant in 1962 in Szeged), a record number of 56 living donor kidney transplants were performed in Hungary. International donor organ exchange is continuously available within the framework of our EUROTRANSPLANT agreement.

In 2022, the Hungarian National Blood Transfusion Service (HNBTS) received 192 donor reports from 49 hospitals, and finally 122 donations from deceased organ donors were in 42 hospitals. 373 organs were removed from brain dead donors and 56 organs from living donors for transplantation purposes.

Based on international data, a single deceased organ donor gives an average of 30.8 life-years to the society, so the last year's 122 deceased organ donors gave our transplanted recipients the opportunity for 3758 new years of life through organ donation.

Last year, 69 organs arrived from abroad for transplant in cooperation with Eurotransplant, among them 43 kidneys, 17 livers and 9 hearts. 22% of the domestic organ transplants became available with organs from foreign deceased donors.

In 2022, a total of 369 organ transplants took place in the seven organ transplantation centers which are located in four university cities in Hungary, in 313 cases with organs removed from deceased donors and in 56 cases from living donors.
